Her targeting was in retaliation for her support of the Black Panther Party and was a smear directly ordered by J. Edgar Hoover. "Seberg" provides a chance from Stewart to move from hubris and naïvete, to fear and paranoia, and finally to a kind of fragmentation.

It's an indulgent picture, a performance in search of a vehicle, a feat of set-dressing rather than the engrossing drama Jean Seberg deserved.

Predictable and then More Predicitable with Sub-Par Acting American film audiences might not consider Jean Seberg a household name, but for French audiences in the ’60s, she was right up there with Audrey Hepburn. She meets Black Panther Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) on a flight, falls into bed with him and is soon deep into ’60s racial politics and radicalism.The film is at its best showing how easily a Hollywood star could needle the paranoid authorities, and the precarious soft power that lent her.

Kristen Stewart, no longer the teenage Twilight heartthrob, dons short-cropped and frosted hair in the very mature and controversial role of Jean Seberg, the American actress, ... She somehow owns this film as though the scrappy, boyish Seberg was the role she’s waited for.
At other times you'll be proud of her for holding herself to her values, even if those values differ from what her society at that time would have considered "traditional" values.

Who can say if what was gained by doing it was worth what it cost her. Her performance burns with far greater intensity than the middling material that surrounds it.Closer to a surveillance drama than a biopic, ‘Seberg’ shows this idealistic, unguarded starlet trying to put her fame and wealth to good use by supporting the civil rights movement – and how easily that narrative was hijacked by a reactionary establishment.
